Backgammon - Free Online Game

What Is Backgammon?

Backgammon, often referred to as an ancient "Game Deserving Glory," is probably the oldest of two-player board games. It traces its history through several thousand years of human development, capturing players in every culture and era. What truly makes the game ageless is that it fuses strategy, chance, and psychological battle within itself. Fundamentally, Backgammon pits two players against one another as each maneuvers his pieces across the triangular points of the board to bear off all his checkers first while skillfully obstructing the checkers of the other player. Either as an old timer or a curious one, there is by way of deep gameplay that always ensures the player returns for much more.

Playing Method

Victory in Backgammon is simple but even simpler to say. A player must bear off all his checker pieces from the board while the opposition still has a few to bear off. To put it simply, one just needs a few stark moves, which are doubly complex.

  1. Board Setup: Each player has 15 checkers to be placed in a very specific way on the board. The board has two-sided triangular areas known as points or pips, combined in the middle by a bar. On either side, there are two sets of three triangular points.

  2. Moving Checkers: Players take turns rolling two dice. The numbers on the dice dictate how many points each checker can move. So a roll of five and three means you may go five points with one checker and three points with another, or move one checker a total of eight points.

  3. Point Movement: Checkers may be moved onto any open point, which means a point with no checkers on it, or onto a point occupied by one's own checkers. Moving onto a point occupied by two or more of the opponent's checkers is prohibited, unless that point contains the only checker of the moving player.

  4. Hitting: If you land on a point with one single checker of your opponent (a blot), you hit that checker and place it on the bar. The opponent must reenter from the bar before moving any other subsequent checker.

  5. Reentering: The checkers sitting on the bar have to reenter on the opponent's home board (last quadrant) before proceeding to any other move.

  6. Bearing off: From the home board, bearing off can now begin. Bear off is done by rolling dice, moving a checker out of the game from the point that corresponds with the number on one of the dice. If there are no checkers on the point corresponding to one die, the player may use the number on the other die to bear off.

  7. Doubling Cube (optional): Doubling is an optional feature to add additional strategical moves into the game. If a player offers to double the game, the opponent must accept the double, or concede the game immediately.

Tips & Tricks

Backgammon requires just as much strategy as it requires a good amount of luck. Here are a few things to work on while playing the game:

  • Stack Your Checkers: Keep your checkers stacked in groups of two or more for sturdier defense. This makes it increasingly difficult for your opponent to hit one of your single checkers.

  • Clear Your Opponent's Checkers: Get rid of your opponents' checkers whenever possible. This opens a point for your own checkers and forces your opponent to start from scratch.

  • Build Your Home Board: Building a home board with at least two checkers per point is an objective. This will act as a strong defense wall and facilitate the bearing-off process.

  • Sprinkle Traps for Your Opponent: Leave some checkers behind that will hamper your opponent's progress. This may force the opponent to hit your checkers or keep theirs open.

History

The story of Backgammon is as rich and diverse as the game itself. The origins are placed in ancient Mesopotamia from where early versions survived in the form of "Tesserae" dating to roughly 3000 BCE. Several centuries evolved this game going around the Mediterranean and into Europe, where it was known by many names, from "Tamboura" in Persia to "Trictrac" in France. Backgammon, as we know it today, appeared in the 17th century with little change to date, firmly establishing itself as the best classical game of strategical brainwork.

Play Unblocked

Although Backgammon is a classical board game, it is available on many online websites nowadays to play on the go. Online Backgammon variants often have options to customize settings and play against AI or friends or strangers, mixed all together. Whether you want some relaxation or a test of your skills, digital Backgammon is the best medium to engage yourself in this game without any hindrance. Always ensure that the online platform is trustworthy to avoid any difficulties.

Enjoy a timeless game of Backgammon with the thrill that changes with every roll of the dice!
