Chess games are games played on a square board. The board has 64 small squares. There are two sides: one side has white pieces, the other has black pieces. Each side has 16 pieces. The pieces are pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, a queen, and a king.
You set up the pieces on the two rows closest to you. Pawns go in front. Other pieces go on the back row. The goal is to checkmate the other king. Checkmate means the king cannot move away from attack. If you checkmate the king, you win the game.
Each piece moves in a special way. Pawns move one square forward, but they only attack diagonally. Rooks move in straight lines along rows or columns. Knights move in an L shape: two squares in one direction and one square to the side. Bishops move along diagonals. The queen can move like a rook or a bishop. The king moves one square in any direction.
Players take turns moving one piece at a time. You cannot move to a square where your own piece already is. If you move to a square with an enemy piece, you take that piece off the board. You think about your move and try to protect your king. You also try to attack the other king or other pieces.
Chess games can be slow or fast. Sometimes people play with clocks. Each player has a limited time to make all moves. If the time runs out, the player loses. Other times, people play without clocks and think as long as they want.
Chess games help you learn to think ahead. You plan moves and try to guess what your opponent will do. You learn to be patient and careful. Many people play chess at home, at school, or online. It is a game that many people enjoy around the world.
